  • radiation is mostly absorbed
  • spontaneous radiation dominates.

    if  n2 >> n1    -  population inversion

    • most atoms occupy level E2, weak absorption
    • stimulated emission prevails
    • light is amplified

      Necessary condition:
       population inversion
